Love Sonnet XVII

by Pablo Neruda

I don't love you as if you were the salt-rose, topaz
or arrow of carnations that propagate fire:
I love you as certain dark things are loved,
secretly, between the shadow and the soul.
I love you as the plant that doesn't bloom and carries
hidden within itself the light of those flowers,
and thanks to your love, darkly in my body
lives the dense fragrance that rises from the earth.
I love you without knowing how, or when, or from where,
I love you simply, without problems or pride:
I love you in this way because I don't know any other way of loving
but this, in which there is no I or you,
so intimate that your hand upon my chest is my hand,
so intimate that when I fall asleep it is your eyes that close.

Read this beautiful Sonnet to your mate on Valentine's Day. There is time to learn it and recite it after dinner when the children have been put to bed. Enjoy your favorite beverage in the ambiance of a candlelit room filled with soft tunes. Dance cheek-to-cheek. Give your sweetheart all of you and demand all of him/her. Stimulate each other's senses with whisperings of sweet nothings and hints of everything to come for both of you that evening.

It's perfectly fine to break from tradition or create a new one. Provide flowers and chocolates if you desire. This True Love Stimulus Package will overshadow any plan coming from Congress and you can guarantee the one you love will be its sole beneficiary.

Do more or less. Do something that your eyes will communicate to each other in a crowded room for years to come.

Avis, I've got the chills! What a beautiful selection! I love Pablo Neruda's poems! (I love his love poetry about feet, too. I think of them as "odes to my beloved's feet. *smile*) Thank you for writing this! I'm going to go look for my one volume of his poetry! I love the poem you selected and your ideas about how to use it on Valentine's Day!

Why am I not surprised you enjoy Pablo Neruda's work, too? I'm grinning a big grin, Jane. I so adore his poetry. And all of his ode's! His stuff takes my breath away, too. You are cool, Jane. Thanks for being snared by the title and being in sync with a friend!

After finding your book, read something to your hubby tonight or bookmark one you'd like him read for you. BUT, make sure he has his eyeglasses on!

Praying you're having a wonderful day.

Synced,
Avis

Hi Avis.

I loved the poem. I shall look into more of his work. But I loved your last line more.

Thanks so much,

Dianne, thank you so very much. I am definitely flattered by your comment on the last line being what you liked most. Wowza! I believe you won't be disappointed looking into Pablo Neruda's poetry. The man was phenomenal, in my humble opinion.
