Valentine Love Bite: A Midnight Picnic in Bed

The kids are fast asleep, away at university or you are now empty nesters. You want to do something special for your spouse on Valentine's Day but unique. Might I suggest a picnic at midnight, in bed?

This can be as simple or elegant as you wish. I like simple elegance. As for the menu, fill a picnic basket with things you both enjoy from this list. Many items are available in quarter-pound quantities. Mix and match as much as you like, depending on how long you want this Valentine Love Bite to last.

Beside the picnic basket you will need napkins (red or heart designs) plastic plates and a good bread knife and spreader; wine opener; glasses; fat candles and music. Don't forget the roses.

Set your imagination free. If you wish to include fragrant massage oils, chocolate syrup, whipped cream, a book of poetry or Love Sonnets, then do so. Or create something of your own telling your spouse what he/she means to you. Write 25 Things About You that I Love. Make the night memorable, romantic and special. Feed each other using fingers and lips. If you note, forks and spoons are not packed in the basket.

If on a budget, this can be enough. If not, buy him silk boxers and yourself something new in the lingerie department. Go for satin bed linen and water effects with a fountain.

You may wonder how to pull this off in secrecy. Go to bed earlier and sneak out of bed to get everything arranged. You can get up at 11:30 on Friday night to put things in place and at the stroke of midnight, awaken your spouse to this romantic setting in your bedroom. You can even tell him/her you'll have a picnic on Saturday in case the goodies are seen in the fridge and about the house. They'll never guess it'll be at midnight in your bedroom.

Another idea would be to make it a Fondue night. Instead of all the goodies above, make it "Dessert at Midnight" but have dinner out or at home. You can also buy a gourmet gift basket and not shop at all. The idea is to be creative and introduce the element of surprise. Break from tradition to keep the home fires burning. It doesn't have to be Godiva Chocolate, you can prepare yourself as a chocolate morsel.
